How to Take Care of Your Retainer

At Dallas Dental Wellness, we do not just aim to help you reach your orthodontic goals, our job is also to help you maintain a healthy and beautiful lifelong smile.

Braces help correct smile imperfections, however, it’s the retainers that work to keep your teeth straight as soon as your braces are taken off. Yes, retainers are just as important as braces, and it plays an essential role in your treatment.

Follow the guidelines set by your Dallas dentist, and make sure that you use your retainer as directed. Here are a few tips on how to take care of your retainer so you can get the most out of them.

Brush your teeth before use

Not only will using your retainer with dirty teeth is going to make your appliance dirty, it can possibly spread bacteria in your mouth. Brushing your teeth with your retainer on is also not advisable. Brush your teeth first, then clean your retainer next.

Keep it clean

Treat your retainers like your own teeth. The bacteria that can build up on your teeth if left uncleaned can also build up on your retainer. No one wants to wear a retainer that is discolored and smells bad! Brush your retainer with water and toothbrush, making sure that you reach the tiniest crevices. Give it a good rinse after scrubbing.

Your retainers would also need an occasional deep clean to keep it in good condition. Soak it in a cleaning solution for approximately 5 minutes or you can use baking soda and water. Allow your retainer to sit in the mixture for the same amount of time.

Keep your retainer away from heat

Your retainer is made of plastic, and heat melts plastic. Do not leave it in a hot environment, like in a hot car or on a sun-facing windowsill. Avoid submerging it in hot water; heat will ruin your appliance.

Keep your retainer in a safe case

Your retainer can easily be damaged because it is fairly soft. It can also be thrown away when wrapped in a napkin. Be sure to bring your retainer case wherever you are. A brightly-colored case may serve as a good visual reminder!

Finally, if you notice that your retainer is behaving differently or deteriorating, be sure to bring it to your Dallas dentist. Even a retainer that is well-made will wear out eventually. For any orthodontic questions, feel free to contact our office at 214-396-7876.
